Using these tools will ensure that the school:

- Embraces the range of government strategies that come under the banner of ECM
- Diagnoses current practice in the light of ECM
- Improves sections 3, 4 and 5 of the SEF
- Saves hours of work.
The materials offer school-oriented perspectives on ECM allowing the school to match current practice with ECM requirements and plan development opportunities. The three tools are technically simple, being just downloadable PDF and Word files. The Word versions allow the school to edit and manipulate the details to suit its own contexts and purposes.
Tool 1. Learner Outcomes
This tool shows each of the five ECM areas as a set of statements describing how a learner might appear when viewed through the ECM framework.
Tool 2. Find the Gaps
This tool draws together a wide range of statements of good practice, grouped under the five ECM outcome areas. These indicate the scope of ECM and how other strategies and initiatives fit within it
Tool 3. The Long View
This tool has the five sets of good practice statements reconfigured into a single list, with space to record more detailed information about practice and to note actions to consider in planning.
Further Information
The CD-ROM also contains short explanatory sections, descriptions of the tools, and ideas about how and when they might be used; also ideas about how the results from using the tools can aid both school planning and completion/updating of the SEF.
