Embedding Learning in Subject Specialisms
Can we use ‘subjects’, with their intrinsically specialising focus, to strengthen our students’ broader learning capacities? The best subject teachers just seem to do this naturally — but are there ways of organising our teaching that can make this the usual case rather than the exception? Can a collection of teaching specialists also be the heart of a community of learners?
Experience at Dr Challoner’s suggests that the answer to all these is a firm ‘Yes’, and this is the theme of our third Autumn Learning Conference for Grammar Schools.
We are delighted that Guy Claxton is returning as our keynote speaker, to spur us on to consider how the framework of subject specialisms may become a scaffolding to support students as they build their powers as learners, and not a prison of isolating cells. The sessions following will illustrate ways of meeting his challenge, offering perspectives for both school leaders and classroom practitioners. As in previous years, students from Dr Challoner’s will lead some of the seminars.
The conference also features a ‘scoop’ report from Dr Ian Millward, on early findings from some research he has been carrying out in schools which have used Professor Claxton’s ideas about building learning power.
